Is it right for you?
A good fit
- Documents, spreadsheets, manuscripts and presentations
- Sharing and editing files with collaborators in real time
- Small datasets that sit alongside your documents
Not a fit
- Multi-terabyte or binary research datasets (use project storage)
- Data that your data security plan restricts to other systems
- The only copy of irreplaceable raw data
What it is
Google Workspace (Google Drive) and Microsoft OneDrive are campus storage services managed by ITS. They are built for documents and collaboration, not large datasets.
What is included
ITS currently lists Google Drive at 100 GB for faculty, staff and graduate students; 25 GB for undergraduates (ITS Storage at UCR, as of Oct 2026), and OneDrive at 100 GB for faculty and staff; 1 GB for undergraduate and graduate students. ITS also notes that faculty may request individual Drive storage up to 1 TB, and create Shared Drives of up to 1 TB each, at no additional cost. The ITS storage page is the authority and covers file size limits, retention after deletion, sharing outside UCR, and supported clients.
Keep in mind
For large or binary research data, use project storage. For data with a protection level above P2, check what your data security plan allows before storing it anywhere.
