Lab system administration (RCSAS)

Design and administration of lab-owned clusters and research servers, under an MOU that sets out what is in and out of scope.

By review Lab systemsMOU Data: P1-P2 (higher only by MOU)

Is it right for you?

A good fit

  • Lab-owned clusters and research servers that need professional administration
  • Labs that want standard, secure configurations and identity management
  • Software installation and configuration on supported lab systems

Not a fit

  • Backup and recovery services (out of scope)
  • Buying or replacing hardware (out of scope)
  • P4-level controls, unless a specific MOU covers them
Not sure? Describe your work in a short consultation request and the team will suggest options. Suggestions are guidance; the service terms decide what is provided.

What it is

The Research Computing System Administration Service (RCSAS) designs, builds and administers lab-owned research clusters and servers. It brings them to a consistent, supportable configuration that is designed to meet UC security standards at P2 or higher.

What is in and out of scope

In scope, under an MOU: architecture and deployment of lab research systems, standard identity and access management, software lifecycle management, and configuration to UC P2 controls.

Out of scope unless an MOU says otherwise: backup and recovery, supplying new or replacement hardware, and P4-level controls.

The RCSAS MOU template shows the full division of responsibilities between Research Computing and the lab.

How to start

Contact Research Computing to describe the system and what you need. If RCSAS is a fit, the engagement is set out in an MOU before work begins.
