Overleaf: "account already registered" error

Symptom

You try to link your UCR Single Sign-On (SSO) login to Overleaf, or to add your UCR email address, and Overleaf shows: "The email/institution account you tried to add is already registered."

Cause

The UCR address or SSO identity is already attached to a different Overleaf account. Common reasons:

  • You have one account under netid@ucr.edu and another under a departmental address (for example @ece.ucr.edu) or a personal address.
  • You created an Overleaf account with your UCR address years ago and later started using another one.

What to do

  1. Do not create another account. UCR staff cannot merge Overleaf accounts; only Overleaf can.
  2. If you can, sign in to each account and note which projects are in which. Download copies of anything important.
  3. Email Overleaf support at support@overleaf.com. Say that you have two Overleaf accounts (give both email addresses), that you are trying to link your UCR SSO identity, and that you need the accounts merged or the UCR address moved to the account you want to keep.
  4. When Overleaf confirms, link your UCR SSO identity from your Overleaf account settings.

For the UCR sign-in steps, see the UC Riverside page on Overleaf. If your account is linked but the UCR premium features do not appear, see KB017.
